Document Summary

C02 in the atmosphere is the most rapidly transferred carbon reservoir. C02 is xed by photosynthetic land plants and marine microbes. C02 is returned to the atmosphere by respiration as well as anthropogenic activities. Microbial decomposition is the largest source of c02 released to the atmosphere. The total amount of carbon in the ocean is about 50 times greater than the amount in the atmosphere. At least 1/2 of the oxygen we breath comes from the photosynthesis of marine microbes. Currently 48% of the carbon emitted to the atmosphere by fossil fuel burning is sequestered into the ocean. Carbon is also sequestered for ling periods of time in carbon reservoirs ( sink ) such as deep ocean and ocean. Oxygenic phototrophic organisms can be divided into 2 groups: plants and microorganisms. Redox cycle - photosynthesis and respiration are a part of this cycle.
