In 1929, half of the families in canada lived below the poverty line. Governments cut spending: wheat prices went up, wheat was one of the major exports at that time, affected prairie provinces. Death rates rose because of poverty, overpopulation. Most immigrants were targeted for communist ideas. Quebec has a well-established system of social welfare that looks after social needs: this is not the work of the government. Saskatchewan is hit the worst out of any provinces after the depression: 66% of saskatchewan was on relief, the rural economy was hit. Government began to expand social safety net. Men"s pride and identity is a big concern during this era. Single men migrated, dnd camps, protest, delayed marriage. Women were expected to quit place of employment once they got married. Age, gender and race determined unemployment"s severity. There were ideas to clear the job of women so that more jobs would appear for men. Most women didn"t go out to work.
