HSC 350 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Arachnoid Mater, Superior Sagittal Sinus, Middle Meningeal Artery
Document Summary
It is seen in the brain & spinal cord. Cns is suspended in the 3 series of 3 membrane covering. The meningeal covering stabilize the shape & position of the cns in head/body movement. The meningeal covering contain layer of cerebrospinal fluid (csf) which decreases the tendency of various force (i. e gravity) that distort the brain. Three layers of the meninges cover the brain & spinal cord: dura mater - thickest, outermost layer, protective and impermeable. Periosteal layer attached to inner surface of skull. ** dural venous sinus form at the attachment of the periosteal and meningeal layers. These sinuses collect venous blood from the brain. Arachnoid mater = middle layer, impermeable, adjoins dura (not tightly bound potential subdural space) separated from pia by subarachnoid space that is filled with cerebrospinal fluid. Pia mater = delicate, permeable & innermost, resting on the brain surface and spinal cord. Both layers are closely united except at venous sinuses.
