Document Summary

Mcim 321. 3/821. 3 principles of immunology 2016 sessions 8 & 9. According to somatic theories, these should be different, and according to germ line theories, they should be identical. We have seen, however, that a comparison of the amino-acid sequences of several different kappa light chains from different species, derived from myeloma proteins, allowed the identification in the variable region of invariant species-specific amino-acid residues. This was expected on somatic theories but posed problems for the germ-line theory, as already discussed, and was naturally used by somaticists as an argument in favor of their view. The pattern became more complex with the determination of considerably more kappa light chain amino-acid sequences. It became apparent that kappa light chains could be classified into different subgroups such that the number of differences in the amino-acid sequence between members of a group was considerably less than between members of different groups.
