NURS 203 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Vestibulocochlear Nerve, Abducens Nerve, Trochlear Nerve
Document Summary
Central nervous system- brain and spinal cord; centre for highest functions in humans (governs thoughts, memory, reasoning, sensation, and voluntary movement) Peripheral nervous system- 31 spinal and 12 cranial nerves, carries messages to the cns from sensory receptors (via afferent fibers), and from the cns to muscles and glands (via efferent fibers) Cranial nerves- exit the brain, supply head and neck, vagus nerve extends to heart, lungs and the gut. You need to know all 12 of the cranial nerves and associated assessments. Many of the tests are done within the context of other systems assessments. e. g. the ear and eye. They enter and exit the brain rather than the spinal cord. Some test both motor and sensory function while many only do one or the other. Although they enter and exit the brain, they are lower motor neurons because they have direct innervation to end point (muscle, organ) Mnemonics: olfactory, optic, oculomotor, trochlear, trigeminal, abducens, facial, acoustic,
