Document Summary

The human consumption markets exist largely in the mediterranean and middle east regions or mediterranean ethnic markets of north america. High tannins in dark seed coated varieties reduce digestibility in monogastrics. The faba bean has a protein content of 24-30% Humans could digest the low tannin variety. Tap rot not as deep as wheat. Leaves are compound pinnate ( 2-6 lea ets) Flowers in clusters 1-5 in leaf axils. Pods are large and green but darken at maturity to black. The white owered ones have no tannins. The rest of the varieties have tannins in the seed coat. Moisture stress at seed production will use reduced seed set and is therefore often produced under irrigation. Can seed it deeper since it is a large seed. They are susceptible to seed coat damage. No moderately saline soils, they do not like it. The tannin varieties do better because they protect the seed coat which makes them more resistant to diseases.
