PLSC 201 Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Beta-Glucan, Endosperm, Caryopsis
Document Summary
Barley ** no notes of the diseases and insects in wheat ** Unique characteristics that make barley a useful crop. It is adapted to areas that are cool and moderately dry. Cooler moist conditions can produce high yields. Good weed competition - better then any other cereal crops. It comes out of the ground earlier then wheat and like cooler temperatures, it accumulated dry matter faster then wheat, which is why it matures faster. Barley has only 1 oret per spikelet. If the internodes are shorter they will stand up better and not lodge. Semi dwarf varieties have a difference in the root system, they don"t have very long roots so you wouldn"t seed them very deep. Surrounds the endosperm and it the major site of enzyme synthesis. Absence of pigment results in a white amber aleurone which is the most common. The palea and lemma, in regular barley the caryopsis is strongly attached.
