Document Summary

Spike has a central rachis which the spikes are attached too. There are single spikelets attached each node on alternate sided of the rachis. Spikelets usually has 6 orets with the 6th usually being sterile. In wheat the auricles have tiny hairs on them which distinguishes them from other grasses. Wheat takes up 30-35% of the kernels weight in water for germination. Radicle emerges rst producing seminal roots, secondary roots are produced from coleoptile node. Coleoptile grows to soil surface and true leaf emerges. 7 to 15 leaves develop depending on the genotype. Flag leaf - the largest leaf and the last to emerge. Does the most photosynthesis to put the starch into the plant. Stem is hollow except at the nodes. Peduncle - the longest part of the stem, and produces the spike. Stem height is determined by growing conditions, plant density, and variety. Tillers develop where the leaf joins the stem.
