PLSC 213 Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Rhizome, Genetic Recombination, Vegetative Reproduction
Document Summary
Bulbs - underground rosette, often can split into smaller bulbs and produce independent daughter plants. Suckers - buds formed on shallow roots. Widely spread ramets, they act physiologically independently. Sexual reproduction is rare and very few of the seeds that are produce will germinate. Groups of clones are ramets that are interconnected with each other or produce a plant. Once a plant does germinate it will produce a robust individual that can survive a great deal of abuse. If you injure one of the ramets or cut a rhizome o somewhere there are a lot more out there and can function as an individual. Always an initial investment of carbon and nutrients from parent as new ramet forms. Some clones break apart rapidly while other maintain connections for long timespans. Avoid competition, they have growth forms that are designed to avoid inter clone competition. Will produce ramets pre existing close to mother plants.
