PLSC 220 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Rootstock, Lonicera Caerulea, Acer Palmatum
Document Summary
Book: the american horticulture society - plant propagation. Optimum propagation conditions are often different from optimum growing conditions. Unusual conditions may be needed to insure survival. The most expensive plants are rare and/or dif cult to propogate. Japanese maple - most are not pink, most are green. Dryland plants may germinate quickly if rain occurs. Knowing where plant comes from will give a clue on how much dormancy it needs. Bottom heat for fast rooting, cold temp induce dormancy. Auxins (rooting hormones) -- like in the lab. Easier to root a tree cutting from near the bottom than the top because genes turn off and turn on owering genes near the top. Seedling are often used instead of clonal rootstocks. Lilacs at home would be easy to propogate. It will bloom and fruit years earlier than juvenile stock. Nobody knows how to make money from this. Money to made to associate a plant with a charity.
