Lecture 7: Internal Structure of the Honey Bee: Abdomen
ABDOMEN Queen worker Drone
Ovaries (1pair) Much enlarged
- each ovary
contains
many ovariole
(egg tubules)
which leads
to the
oviducts: this
is where the
eggs are
produced
- each ovary
has 160-185
ovarioles
- reduced pair
- eggs that they
might
produce will
always yield
drones unless
it is the cape
bee
- 2-10 ovarioles
- parts:
oviducts
spermathecal
(reduced)
Absent
Spermatheca:
storage
compartment (organ)
for sperm cells
received at mating
- stored in
body for rest
of life
Large Small, often though
of as a remnant
absent
Internal Structure of the Honey Bee: Digestive System
- there are 3 parts: foregut, midgut, hindgut
- foregut and hindgut are actually very similar: they are being continuous with the
external (ectodermal origin) surface of the bee
othese will shed or molts lining when a larval instar molts
- midgut consist of cells that have a different origin (are going to account for the actual
digestion)
othey produce enzymes to break down food
LARVA
- foregut of the larva is reduced
- midgut = ventriculus (true stomach) is where digestion occurs, this is much larger than
foregut
- hindgut consists of the small intestine and 1 large pair of Malpighian tubules
- Malpighian tubule: serve to remove nitrogenous waste from the bee’s blood

Document Summary

Lecture 7: internal structure of the honey bee: abdomen. Small, often though of as a remnant absent. Spermatheca: storage compartment (organ) for sperm cells received at mating stored in body for rest of life. Midgut consist of cells that have a different origin (are going to account for the actual digestion: they produce enzymes to break down food. Midgut = ventriculus (true stomach) is where digestion occurs, this is much larger than foregut hindgut consists of the small intestine and 1 large pair of malpighian tubules. Pharynx: a muscular pump-like device that draws fluid (examples: water, nectar) to be drain up the proboscis and passed to the esophagus. Esophagus: narrow tube that conducts food from the pharynx through the thorax to the honey sax in the abdomen. Honey sac (crop): this region is highly elastic, so capable for great enlargement as well as having the ability to contract: contraction= regurgitation. Proventriculus: terminal part of the foregut: has 2 important parts.
