Document Summary

Number of wives varies in societies around the world. Monogamy: only 1 wife, only thing legal in our society, most common in the world. Associated polyandry: men do not know each other, start out monogamous but when they get more financial they bring in another man, the first husband is seen as senior. Marriage is accompanied by an exchange of goods. Groom and his family gives goods and money to the bride"s family as compensation. Bride wealth is often used to finance son"s wedding: primarily in agricultural societies. A woman"s contribution is what she brings to the marriage is dowry. In the event of a divorce a woman can reclaim her dowry. Hypergomy is that a woman has to marry up in class: how women are treated in future depends on size of dowry. Non-conjugal family: single parent and kids. Conjugal family: both spouses and kids there is a marriage.
