Powell the head of us geological survey founded the bureau for american ethnology, a agency set up to study native american culture. Powell recommended the setting up of reservations and also began recording oral histories. In 1881 he hired cyrus thomas to head the bureau and settle the question of the mound builders once and for all. In egypt excavation have been continuing at a rapid pace and the most prolific of these excavators was sir matthew williams petrie. Petrie worked for the egypt exploration society in england and returned to egypt every winter as the summer was too hot to work in. He produced very fine catalogues of his finds in the uk, marking egyptology to prehistoric roman history. With the excavations of petrie archaeological methodology has been re defined. He pioneered the concept of total recording from making plans, sections and even models rand recorded the position of every object: recovering all objects no matter how mundane.
