Chemical reactions: metabolism is a functional characteristic of all living organism -> sum total of all of the chemical reactions, anabolic reactions -> make bonds, catabolic reactions -> break bonds, exchanges of matter and energy. Forms of energy important in human functioning: chemical, mechanical, radiant, electrical. Characteristics of chemical reactions: reactants 1 or more substances that enter into reaction, products 1 or more substances produced by the reaction, all chemical reactions are governed by the law of conservation of mass. In theory, any chemical reaction is reversible: most reactions in human body have a predictable direction. Factors influencing the rate of chemical reactions: properties of reactants, surface area, gases vs. liquid vs. solids, size, how reactive the elements are (hydrogen vs. helium)
