Document Summary

Receptor mediated endocytosis: the ldl receptor and hypercholesterolemia. Define the key terms (scientific words) in your own words. (notes or textbook can be used as sources) Endocytosis is the process through which cells acquire nutrients and small particulates, and it does this through phagocytosis, pinocytosis and receptor-mediated endocytosis, which is the main focus of our assignment. All of these forms have the same process through which they absorb the nutrients within their environment. Receptor-mediated, refers to the inner cellular membrane containing proteins that are exposed to the outside extracellular environment. Only specific substances that bind to the exposed protein, called ligands, will allow for this specific endocytic process to occur. This can be comparable to a type of lock and key mechanism. Ligands are substances that forms a bond with a biomolecule with the protein, which sends out a signal to the cell or organism for a specific process to take place.
