First established 175 years ago that organisms are built from cells. Cells small membrane-enclosed units filled with a concentrated aqueous solution of chemicals, which can create copies of themselves by growing and dividing into two. Living cells all have a similar basic chemistry. Composed of the same sort of molecules, which participate in the same types of chemical reactions. Genetic information in the form of genes carried in dna molecules: same chemical code, same chemical building blocks, same machinery and same replication. Dna polymer chains made rom same set of 4 nucleotides strung together in different sequences. Appearance and behavior of a cell dictated largely by protein molecules. Built by same set of 20 amino acids. Recall that viruses are compact packpages of genetic information encased in protein, but aren"t cells because they need to infect to reproduce, cannot reproduce on their own. Mutation change dna so daughter cells do not always match the parent cell exactly.
