BIOL130L Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Harper College, Robert Scott (Philologist), Monosaccharide
Document Summary
Biol 130 lab, 2017 september 29th, room number stc 4008. The purpose of this lab is to identify the macromolecules present in different solutions by using different indicators. There are three tests in this lab: iodine test for starch and glycogen, benedict"s test for reducing sugars and biuret test for proteins. The iodine test can indicate the presence of starch and glycogen in the solution. Iodine, which is lugol"s solution, is a pale yellow clear liquid indicator. When in contact with starch, the indicator turns dark navy. Starch is a mixture of 10-20% amylose and 80-90% amylopectin. The structure of amylose consists of long polymer chains of glucose units connected by an alpha acetal linkage. All the monomer units are alpha -d-glucose, and all the alpha acetal links connect c # 1 of one glucose to c # 4 of the next glucose. Glycogen is structurally quite similar to amylopectin which is 80% starch.
