Learning objectives: to understand (cid:862)(cid:373)ost-(cid:448)alua(cid:271)le pla(cid:455)er(cid:863) ba(cid:272)teria (cid:449)ithi(cid:374) the categories of gram-negative bacteria (within the proteobacteria), gram-positive bacteria (within the firmicutes), actinobacteria, and cyanobacteria. We have now seen how the life forms that exist on earth today are evolutionarily related. While taxonomy of the bacteria is continually maturing, a current (but limited) view of the taxonomy is shown in appendix 1 of your textbook. In the next few lectures, we will look at several examples of the substantial diversity of bacterial life. We will see where these organisms live, and how they make their living. We will discuss key bacteria that you will encounter in the environment, your bodies, or in a variety of biotechnological settings. We will start with the proteobacteria, which are metabolically and morphologically diverse gram-negative organisms. Anoxygenic photosynthesis (no oxygen produced h2o not source of e-) O2 inhibits photosynthesis, but some can grow aerobically using respiration.
