When environmental conditions become too harsh to permit further vegetative growth and reproduction, certain bacteria (ex. Bacillus and clostridium) are capable of condensing their vital cellular components into an endospore. Sporulation -> cell slows down, loses moisture, and withdraws its substance into one area which it surrounds with a thick impermeable wall. Endospore (or spore) is high resistant to environmental influences. Spores resist ordinary dyes (methyelene blue, crystal violet, and carbolfuchsin. Primary stain (7. 6% malachite green) is driven to cell with heat. Counterstain (gram"s safranin) can give vegetative cells a contrasting colour (light red)
