BIOL241 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Catabolism, Archaea, Extracellular Polymeric Substance
Document Summary
Microbial ecology = study of relationships between microorganisms & their environments. Microorganisms do exist as individual but if they have any resources at all they grow bigger & grow into 2 & keep dividing & growing. Energy flows in ecosystem, can be organic or inorganic, old organisms die & waste products are formed and are recycled to make new biomass. Energy flows & materials cycling in ecosystem. Example of ecosystem: microbial inhabitants of a freshwater lake ecosystem water column bottom sediment. Sunlight is main energy source, its availability decreases as you go down the water column. H2s, sulfide acceptor: guild 3 = produce organic end products (fermentation) are used as resourced by other organisms, guild 4 = generate ch4 end product & other organisms generate acetate are grouped together b/c they use co2. Respirations: o2 acceptor but not in terms of their energy and c sources (animals) always true in microbial world (plants)
