BIOL301 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Inferior Vena Cava, Segmental Arteries Of Kidney, Nephron
Document Summary
Urinary system: maintains the chemical consistency of the blood, regulates water balance, sends wastes and toxins out of the body (waste products = urea, uric acids, creatinine) Renal fascia: outer layer, thin layer of dense connective tissue that hold the kidneys in place. Adiose capsule: middle layer, peritoneal fat capsule for cushioning, protection and anchoring. Renal capsule: inner layer, fibrous connective tissue in contact with kidney, shapes the kidney. Hilum: vertical cleft containing vessels, nerves and the ureter. Kidneys: forms urine, found in the lower thoracic/upper lumbar region, secured by 3 layers of tissue. Renal cortex: superficial region of the internal kidney. Renal pelvis: funnel shaped tube that collects filtrate from major and minor calicies. Renal pyramids: consist of tubules that transport urine from cortex to calicies. Interlobular (cortical radiate) vein-> arcuate vein-> interlobar vein-> segmental-> Nephron: functional unit of the kidney, apx 1 million found in the kidney. Cortical nephron: superficial nephrons with short loops of henle.
