BIOL302 Lecture Notes - Lecture 99: Eyepiece, Your Sinclair, White Blood Cell
Document Summary
Introduction to microscopes and staining procedures used in histology. In biology 302 we use nikon alphaphot ys2 microscopes. They are hardy, economical, and give good image quality. Inside are many glass components (lenses, prisms) that are precisely aligned. A sharp blow or dropping the microscope can result in misalignment of these components. Before you start each lab set up the microscope properly to reduce the chance that you will get dizzy or develop headaches. Eyepieces - the eyepieces enlarge the image by 10x. They can be moved closer or further apart to match the distance between your eyes. The focus of one eyepiece can also be adjusted individually to accommodate differences in the focusing power of your two eyes. Start by moving the eyepieces together and slowly pulling them apart until you no longer see black shadows. Too close together and you are essentially cross-eyed. Too far apart and you will see dark shadows all the time.
