BIOL302 Lecture 2: F14_Lab_2_connectiveL
Document Summary
Don"t worry about the organs you are looking at right now. Organ systems will be covered in later labs. This week you will look at connective tissues. Same advice as last week: do not try to memorize each tissue but classify it by recognizing the cells and fibres that make up the tissue. Connective tissue is the medium that surrounds and supports the other tissues of the body. The term stroma is used to describe the connective tissue component of an organ, and the term parenchyma refers to the actual functioning component of the organ. For example in the liver the shape or structure of the organ is maintained by the connective tissue (stroma), while the hepatocytes of the parenchyma perform the liver functions. Most connective tissue arises from the embryonic mesenchyme which is derived from the mesoderm. Functions of connective tissue: mechanical support and protection of soft tissues.
