BIOL302 Lecture 6: Female Reproductive System
Document Summary
Ovaries-has a distinctive ct that lets you know where you are. You should be able to recognize the ovary as an organ. It has spaces of different sizes pushed to the periphery/outside - follicles. Immature follicles make up tiny circles that are to the outside. Cortex -has a distinctive ct with thick heavy nuclei and a dark swirling pattern. Medulla -interior part that consists mainly of blood vessels. This is called germinal epithelium and unlike most epithelium it is simple cuboidal epithelium (not simple squamous). In the ovary we can see the distinctive ct (with the swirling pattern- stained blue) A distinctive feature found in the ovary are the follicles. There are a lot of different follicles in the ovary. The follicle itself consists of the germ cells and surrounding supporting follicular cells. In the fetus the follicles are present as oogonia (we will not look at them). These are primary oocytes that are arrested in prophase.
