BIOL308 Lecture 4: Lecture 4
Document Summary
Rnas with enzymatic functions ribozymes (in splicing, and peptide bond formation during protein synthesis) Discovery of small nuclear and cytoplasmic rnas has changed a lot. Long stretches of rna- not coding but may be vital to a cell; involved in disease production or lack of can cause disease. Cannot assume rna strands are degratory products grna: involved in rna editing in protozoans, snrna: small nuclear rna snorna: small nucleolar rna vrna: viral rna sirna: small interfering rna. Primary structure of rna is similar to dna. 2" oh group prevents formation of b-helix: a-helix is formed (oh group) Rna, can be single or double stranded, linear or circular (circular rna occurs during rna splicing). Different conformations (2 and 3 structure formation) permit the rnas to carry out specific functions in the cell. Rna molecules can fold back on themselves to form base-paired segments between short stretches of complementary sequences.
