To minimize the number of troubleshooting and service calls, a company must strive to include complete information about the product. To avoid legal problems, writers of instructional manuals must include safety information in the most logical places and in attention-getting ways. A consideration of audience is essential, because the reading audience for a manual may be technical, non-technical, or mixed. 24-25 for a basic list of instructional manual elements, including such things as a motivation to read the document ( to ensure safety . to get optimal performance . ) and, more crucially, a list of cautions: prepare the reader regarding the potential hazards, and remind the reader throughout the document. Use caution graphics (see p. 26 for examples).
