ENGL 210I Lecture 4 Thursday September 17, 2013  Using little words like “the” and “a” make a big difference o For example: Did you see THE broken glass?  This presupposes that there indeed was broken glass  “its differences that make a difference” o if you use different words it can make a big difference  tag questions (“isn’t it” “weren’t you” “correct” “isn’t that true”) are questions that ask for agreement or confirmation o example: It’s a nice day today, isn’t it?  There are powerful and powerless people in the court o Lawyers are very powerful in the courtroom  They controls the speaking etc
