ENVS201 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Light Pollution, Sustainable Development, Precautionary Principle
Document Summary
Laws have to come from somewhere, they all have sources. For laws to be authoritaive, they need to have a source. Environmental problems: noise or light polluion, energy usage. Since canada is so big, we use a lot of energy for transportaion. Since canada is so cold, we use a lot of energy to heat our homes. The majority of canadians care more about the environment than the security of the energy secion: but talk is cheap! Maybe what canadians want aren"t being put into acions and laws. We regulate the environment for many reasons but also to look good compared to other countries. Tragedy of the commons: inite resources + open access. We are going to exploit resources whether no one or everyone exploit resources. We could regulate or put quotas on resources. It"s hard to sue big corporaions with lots of money when you are a poor lobbyist.
