GEOG101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Demographic Transition, Thomas Robert Malthus, Malthusianism
Document Summary
Demographic transition model- describes population effects of industrialization, urbanization and economic growth. Stage 1: high births but also high deaths. Stage 2 and 3: better health and sanitation, death and birth rates drop, but death rates drop faster making a population growth. This demographic model shows that in the beginning, there are high birth and death rates, but deaths rates start to drop causing a population growth, birth rates eventually drop too with low birth and death rates. In developing countries, the first stage in the demographic model is caused by the spread of disease such as hiv/aids, which caused high death rates. Thomas malthus: wrote that the increase of population will eventually exceed the increase of food production, believed that war, diseases, and famine is a way to control population and the outcome is positive.
