History 105: origins of race music (blues & jazz) Race music has now been broken down into multiple genres: blues, jazz, r&b, gospel. Origins are very murky, hard to pin-point a starting point. William christopher wc handy (1873-1958) helps to create the label & style of the blues . Born in alabama 1873, poor background with strong work ethic. Encouraged by mother to take up music. Multi-talented with instruments (piano, organ, violin, and signing) His band would play for families as well as other black audiences. Played for jim crow white audiences as well (one of the first black artist to gain a white audience) On a train ride heard a another musician plucking a guitar in a manner he had never heard before. Travelling across the south, he began hearing this type of black folk music everywhere. Moved to memphis and began recording with the blues element behind him. Defined as the father of blues music .
