- We are in the bottom half of child poverty in developed countries (1 in 7 kids
– it’s unacceptable
What can adverse socio-economic conditions in childhood be a predictor of in
later life?
- Adverse socio-economic conditions in childhood can be a greater predictor of
CVD and diabetes in adults in later life circumstances and behavioural
choices
- CMA is acknowledging limits of what they can do

government levels
What is the Public Health Parable?
- Couple travelers walking through village, following course of river
- Notice folks spend awful lot of time pulling children out of river (die from
falling in or hypothermia as a result)
- Villagers end up spending a lot of time and resources pulling children out, so
1 traveler decides to go help while the other turns to run upstream
- Traveler who runs upstream discovers school on top of cliff above river that
has no barrier
Moral: We need to head upstream and erect more barriers, Not stay downstream
and continue to perpetuate cycles

- By the age of 3, kids from privileged homes (not just economically, also
emotionally, e.t.c.), have heard 30 MILLION more words than kids from the
lowest socioeconomic status – = A great predictor of kids well-being, going to
school, and doing well in school)
