KIN 105 Lecture 3: Kin 105 Lecture 3
Document Summary
Lecture 3 skeletal muscle structure and function. Primary functions of skeletal muscle: force production, thermoregulation, force/ shock absorption, fuel storage fats, glycogen. Important concepts regarding skeletal muscle structure and function. Amino acids play central roles both as building blocks of proteins and as intermediates in metabolism. Proteins are large biomolecules, or macromolecules, consisting of one or more long chains of amino acids residues. They function as different enzymes (atpase), channels, pumps, and transporters. Structure/ complex is a cluster of several different proteins, such as thin filament, thick filament, and z disks. Protein isoforms highly related proteins that possess very similar amino acids sequences and perform essentially the same biological function. Differ only 10-15% in amino acid composition. Protein activity (enzyme activity) the rate (speed) at which the protein is performing its function. Protein activity is determined by how fast it does its job.
