Document Summary

Culture is generally defined as the arts and other manifestations of human intellectual achievement regarded collectively. Culture offers the way people understand their world and make sense of it therefore it can be learned, and it consists of multiple layers. Individual values can be measured collectively and be inferred as culture. Work is valued differently across cultures and people for whom work was a central interest work more hours than those who have work as less important. Hofstede discovered that there seemed to be four basic dimensions along which work related values different across time. Power distance: the extent to which an unequal distribution of power is accepted by societies members. In large power distance cultures, inequality is accepted as natural, superiors are inaccessible, and power differences are highlighted. Uncertainty avoidance: the extent to which people are uncomfortable with uncertain and ambiguous situations.
