LS222 Lecture 8: LS 222 Lecture 8
Document Summary
Focuses on reaction to delinquency: official reaction (system) & informal reaction (teachers, parents) Sometimes reaction to delinquency leads offenders to reoffend: individuals given that delinquent label leads others to reject them & treat them in a harsh way. Draws on other theories we"ve talked about: kind of an extension from these theories, distinction: focuses on the reaction to the delinquency and the impact the reaction has on the young person. Doesn"t try to explain why the person gets into trouble in the first place. Wants to explain why some young people move onto more serious delinquency. Symbolic interactionism: the symbols we attach to objects are defined through our interactions with other people, behaviour influenced by peoples decisions and judgements, those judgements are affected by our social relationships. Social interactions affect our self image and our self concept. We figure out who we are through interactions with others: charles horton cooley: looking-glass self.
