PHIL215 Lecture 1: PHIL 215 - Lecture 1
Document Summary
Fact something that is backed up by evidence, objective = cannot be subjectively changed by your opinions (not subject to change), related to truth, universal, not dependent on anyone"s point of view. Values are different than opinions because values are more static, opinions can change more easily and are subject to change with evidence, values are individually subjectively and do not necessarily have to be subject to change. That"s just your opinion is a phrase that we use rhetorically to undermine somebody"s position. The basic idea here seems to be that because opinions are non-factual, they are all equivalently useless. Just because opinions are non-factual it doesn"t mean they are all equivalent. Some opinions are much, much, more justified than others. Our values are opinions (beliefs) but they are a special kind of opinion. Relativism depends on context (culture) to determine what is right or wrong.
