PLAN261 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Liang Sicheng, Lin Huiyin, Siheyuan
Document Summary
Historical areas usually stand in the way of chinese cities reinventing themselves as centers of finance, media, and cultural industry. However, many were taken down in 1990s because of urban renewal. The historical architecture is preserved; new buildings have the same style for city-branding and urban tourism purposes. 1996 historic district conservation was deemed important and necessary. In reform era of beijing, destruction of historical structures continued with urban renewal projects. 1980s, the city attempted preservation by restricting building heights (they were not strictly abided by). Preservation policies started in 1957, and by 2000 more than 800 sites were placed under protection and underwent restoration. A problem is that zoning law enforcement is hard since some developers are willing to pay the fine for demolishing landmarked buildings due to high property prices. In 2012, the house of liang sicheng and lin huiyin was demolished.
