Document Summary

Vector representation: based on vectors, as opposed to space-occupancy raster studies, complex representation based on primitive objects (points, lines, areas, represents the spatial location of features explicitly, space intervening between graphic entities does not have to be stored. Nested polygon = containment, when one is within another polygon. It matters in gis because: connections and relationships between objects are independent of their coordinates. Geometry of objects may change under transformations. However, neighborhood relationships remain the same: overcomes major weaknesses of spaghetti model allowing gis analysis (overlaying, network continguity, connectivity, requires all lines to be connected, polygons closed, loose ends removed. Looking at spatial relationships in spatial terms btwn connected or adjacent geographical objects and also connected nodes. It"s the mathematical model used to define spatial relationships: connectivity: point line relationship, line line connection, area definition: line polygon relationship, continguity: polygon polygon adjacency.
