Psci 150: rise of the american world order. Since 1945: american-led world order: held together by different faces of us power. End of the 1914-1945 disaster: rebuilt after the war (dresden, germany, rebuild of tokyo japan, global refugee crisis (prisoners of war, holocaust survivors etc. no home to go back to, old powers were exhausted (germany and japan defeated. Japan defeated and occupied: britain bankrupt and bombed out. Italy conquered, humiliated, and liberated: soviet russia was the exception. Most powerful military industrial complex: 2/3 worlds gold reserves, worlds invested capital. Of all shipping vessels, worlds manufacturing, 3x gross national product of soviet union, 5x gross national product of great britain. The problem: what is the us to do: option 1: retreat to fortress america , option 2: permit european powers to rebuild, option 3: remain engaged in the world. Vision of the post war order that is : open, friendly, stable. Open: free trade across regions, foster prosperity and growth.
