They give a checks and balance on primaries. There are far less super delegates than people, their votes do not make a primary undemocratic. The people still have the majority of the power. Founding fathers - grass roots politics (tradition) Wanted the super delegates to have experience. Don"t trust the people to make decisions (can manipulate the people, as is seen in the uk separation from the european union movement) Can use their personal judgement to support competent candidates. In practical use, super delegates don"t often go against the party. They gain their elite status by their experience. Ensures that those who chose maintain control over the nominating process because they have the judgement, knowledge and experience necessary. They select the candidate that has the best chance of winning. Super delegates do not cause a party divide. Super delegates control the amount of nominees there are so that the party is more uni ed.
