Cognitive psychologists are interest in the ability to reason. A set of symbols, usually words, that convey meaning. Linguistics: the study of language (speech, sounds, meaning, grammar) Quickly learn simple rules of language becomes more complex. Psycholinguistics is the study of how language is acquired, perceived, understood, and produced: phonology: the study of sounds of language. Morphemes: semantics: the study of meanings of words & sentences, syntax: how words combine to form phrases, sentences, etc. Humans have an unborn universal grammar a mental language acquisition device (lad) Learning theory says people speak and understand a language because specific language behaviours are reinforced. Mental categories people use to classify events and objects according to common properties. Problem solving strategies: trial and error, algorithm.
