PSYCH230 Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Recovered-Memory Therapy
Document Summary
It substantially increases the risk that children will suffer significant, often life-long, harm. Children are a very easy target group, offenders tend to target vulnerable children (shy, alone, that they could use a friend, low self-esteem) Recovered memories happen (but not always in an agreement if they had been forcibly repressed) Memories recovered under hypnosis or the influence of drugs are particularly unreliable: even more influential when used on children. Memories pre 3 years old are especially unreliable. Both real and false memories can be distressing. They are studies that show, that if children are asked neutral and none leading questions, in words that they can understand, and have not been influenced by others, even young children can be very accurate and reliable. When you start introducing new things, this is when the bias comes, and memories are pushed away.
