Social psych lecture 7: social beliefs and judgements part 2. How we explain people"s behaviour, why they do what they do. How much attention do we actually pay to people we interact with. Change blindness: a person viewing a visual scene fails to detect large changes in the scene. Choice blindness: not paying full attention to the person, focusing on distractions, shown photographs of 2 people, pick which one you think is more attractive, give photograph of more attractive person to researcher. 2 causes of behaviour: external (situation) vs. internal (personal) Internal: behaviour is caused by internal factors like personality, attitudes, motives. External: person"s behaviour caused by situational factors. Type of attribution is determined by weighting 3 pieces of information: consensus, distinctiveness, consistency. Example: paul recommends a restaurant to you. People act on their beliefs, regardless of validity. Our attitudes towards people are often based on explanations for their behaviour.
