Why: evolutionary, strength in numbers, social brain . Identity: we are our groups, social identity theory. Groups matter: we used ostracism to punish: banishment, solitary confinement, even ostracism from seemingly silly things. Cyberball group of 3 people when left out in passing ball even when told that people are detestable. Triplett: noticed cyclists were faster in groups (in 1888 wondered if having people around improves your performance) Tested: children with reels: children reeled twine faster when others were around, even when they weren"t competing! Problem: we don"t always do better when others are around: athletes can choke under pressure, stage fright can paralyze us, having someone watch us can ruin our performance (video games)
