PSYCH261 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Tryptophan, Small Molecule, Stimulant
Document Summary
Neuropeptides (large protein molecules + gaseous neurotransmitters (gas molecules) Small molecule neurotransmitters (monoamines modified acids & amino acid neurotransmitters) Amino acid transmitters (most common glutamate, excitatory polarization. & gaba, inhibitory hyperpolarization which takes away from the threshold) The amino acids that you take from your diet can have an effect on your psychological diet (can control what is going on in your mind by controlling your diet) When neurotransmitter attaches to receptors and immediately opens ion channels. Channels that open or close depending on whether the neurotransmitter is attached to a receptor. Occur when neurotransmitters attach to a receptor ad initiates a sequence of slower and longer lasting metabolic reactions. When the neurotransmitter attaches, the g-protein is released. G-protein itself as well as other messengers it activates can attach to ion channels on the inside of the cells therefore opening up the ion channels which allows the ions to pass through now.
