Individualistic cultures encourage individuals to prioritize their own personal goals and to emphasize ways they are different from others. The prototypic self is an independent, autonomous, unchanging agent defined by distinctions from others and motivated to achieve authentic self-expression (i. e. north america, western europe). Collectivistic culture encourage emphasis on collective goals. The prototypic self is interdependent, defined by relations with others, motivated to maintain harmonious relationship by accommodating self to others, and sensitive to relational obligations (i. e. east asia). Those with a more independent self-schema are more likely to define the self in terms of person-specific attributes rather than role-based or context specific attributes. Decrease in family size (increase in prevalence of single-child families) Decrease in multigenerational households (increase in seniors living alone) Increase in use of individualistic words being googled (and vice versa) Increase in the number of babies receiving uncommon names. Narcissistic personality inventory (npi) mesures exhibitionism, superiority, self-sufficiency, exploitativeness, vanity, authority, and entitlement.
