Doing gender - how we socially construct differences between male and female (exaggerated or subtle) Gender role - a se pf expectations abut behaviour and attitudes related to being male or female. How we are socialized to embrace and accept gender roles. Tendency to break down people into categories, typically opposites. 2 kinds of people in the world - dichotomization. Patterns are not homogeneous but vary according to the social class to which a person belongs. Boys are rough and masculine, girls are emotional and soft. Working class - concerned with tting in. Upper middle class families are most likely to support egalitarian gender relations. Gender self image is affected by ideals expressed in the media. Middle class = makes the social values. Individuals are socialized in their families according to traditional gender roles - men is bread winner, women are homeworkers.
