Crime (like deviance) is a social fact. We have all been impacted by crime in some way. We must consider how and why crime occurs & how we can attempt to control it. Secondary victimization i. e. stolen cars - you pay more insurance in case. Criminology is not focused on getting rid of crime. Criminology is the body of knowledge regarding crime as a social phenomenon. Criminology is a body of knowledge regarding crime as a social phenomenon. Includes the processes of making & breaking laws. Objective of criminology is the development of verified principles & knowledge regarding processes of law, crime, and treatment. Theoretical examination of crime begins in the 1700s. Crime is a matter of pleasure vs. pain. People have free will to choose criminal or lawful solutions to meet their needs/problems. Criminal solutions may be more attractive than lawful ones because they usually require less work for a greater payoff.
