Getting a tattoo in order to stand out is a conventional way to stand out. We are still being part of the conventions in some form. Humans in society are just half the picture. We want what society expects of us. Social location involves being as well as conduct. Social location influences our : personality, consciousness, peer group. Role theory how we see ourselves. Sociology of knowledge how we see the world. Reference group theory who we associate with. Role theory c. h. cooley, g. h. mead, w. i. thomas. Thomas definition of the situation: each social situation has specific expectations that reveal specific responses, i. e. Expectations fall into clusters (roles) (e. g. student, parent, child, friend, spouse, etc. Role: a typified response to a typified expectation (e. g. metaphor of a script in a play).
