Introducing subject matter and themes that will be developed in the course: reasons its called democratic policing is because we live in a democratic society where as others have to deal with their authoritative systems. They have free reign, can use force whenever they want. Because we have civil rights, the police are constrained in their power. Society controls their power through government power and by citizens who complain. Theoretical models used in criminal justice system, crime control model and due process model and how they apply to the value system. Organizations of police services, numbers, costs, recruitment, number of female officers, structure of the police, romp, opp, historical overview of policing, training and education. Professional model of policing, police stress, police behaviour (formal/informal), powers of arrest, discretion, police deviance, police brutality (rodney king), racial profiling. Polygraph was used by dr. derechoes, and tearoom activity, police on domestic violence. Police protest movement (crowd behaviour, community based policing).
