Called this because we live in a democratic society so it differs from other society ( authoritarian, totalitarian, etc) in democratic society, police are constrained because people have civil rights. Police powers are limited and controlled, by civilian agencies, gov, vigilance of citizens, etc. Organization of police services: numbers, costs, recruitment of women, minorities, structures of police (rcmp, ontario provincial police) etc. Sub-culture and police behaviour - formal and informal. Patrol work and use of discretion - powers of arrests. Patterns and theories of police deviance: police brutality, racial profiling, etc. Social control agencies - mandate to examine and deal with allegations police deviance. Police response to domestic violence - lead to mandatory arrests. B: recurring themes in the course: idea that policing is one of many agencies of social control. A lot of these are informal social controls - informals are often more effective than the formal social controls (the police).
